More than a set of wheels.
Peugeot intended to introduce the 504 in spring 1968, but France's social crisis delayed the launch. The new, larger successor to the 404 appeared just before the Paris motor show that autumn. It combined a conservative family-sedan mission with a distinctive body and a notably sophisticated independent suspension layout. The 504 won the 1969 European Car of the Year award and the wider model family ultimately remained in production in multiple countries and body styles for decades.
Look a little closer.
The 504 and the older 404 stayed on sale together for seven years even though the 504 was designed as the larger successor.

Why the rear suspension mattered
Many family cars of the period used a solid rear axle connecting the rear wheels. The 504's independent rear suspension allowed one rear wheel to move without forcing the other to make the same motion. On uneven roads, that helped the tires follow the surface and contributed to the combination of comfort and control for which the 504 became known.

The 1968 carbureted Berline is only the starting point of a very large family. Peugeot later offered injected engines, diesels, estates, coupes, cabriolets and pickups, and production continued in several countries. Specifications must therefore stay attached to a year, body, market and engine: the launch sedan's 1.8-litre figures should not be borrowed from a later 2.0-litre car.
