Peugeot 601 C Berline

Peugeot's 1934 flagship stretched the bonnet for a smooth six-cylinder engine while keeping the independent front wheels of the smaller 01 cars.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Peugeot presented the 601 in May 1934 to crown its 01 range above the 201 and 301. This profile chooses the launch 601 C Berline on the short chassis, not the later D shapes or long-wheelbase limousines. The six-cylinder TA engine and synchronized three-speed gearbox aimed for quiet, flexible progress rather than sports-car acceleration. The 601 family offered ten versions, but lasted only through 1935; L'Aventure Peugeot records 3,999 cars in all.

Look a little closer.

Peugeot's first digit was a size clue: the 601 sat above the 201, 301 and 401 as the flagship of the 01 family.

Short Berline versus long and streamlined 601s

The launch 601 C Berline used the short chassis, around 2.98 metres between axles. Long-chassis family limousines and the later streamlined D bodies had different dimensions and weights. This is why the page does not borrow the five-metre length or 1.4-tonne figure sometimes quoted for the largest 601s.

A contemporary look inside the transmission

An August 1934 technical article describes a single-plate clutch, a three-speed synchromesh gearbox plus reverse, a shaft with a central joint and Silentbloc engine mounting. Those details explain how Peugeot tried to keep a large car quiet and easy to use, not simply how much power it made.
