Chrysler turned van space into a car-sized family machine with front-wheel drive, a flat floor and seats that could come out.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Production of Chrysler's new minivans began in November 1983 for the 1984 model year. The Voyager LE tested by Car and Driver used the optional Mitsubishi 2.6-litre engine, three-speed automatic and seven-passenger seating. This profile therefore says 1984 even though the first examples were built and sold late in 1983.

Look a little closer.

At 175.9 inches long, the original Voyager was shorter than many family sedans, yet removing its rear seats turned it into a tall cargo box.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

A van that behaved more like a car

Conventional American vans used trucklike rear-drive frames. The Voyager combined a transverse engine, front-wheel drive, low step-in height and compact width, so families could park and see out of it much like a passenger car.

Model year matters

The brochure and road test both identify a 1984 Voyager. Historical production began in November 1983, which explains why the vehicle is often called a 1983 introduction. Joyride labels the actual model year and keeps the calendar date in the subtitle.
