A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Pontiac's affordable mid-engined Fiero evolved quickly from 1984 to 1988. The GT gained V6 power in 1985 and a fastback roof for 1986½. For the final 1988 model year Pontiac installed an entirely new suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, while staggered WS6 tires helped balance the chassis. The same year introduced the Formula, which shared GT performance hardware but kept the ordinary notchback body—an important visual distinction.

Look a little closer.

The 1988 Formula could have the GT's V6 and performance suspension, but only the GT wore the long fastback roof.

The final-year chassis mattered

The Fiero began with cost-saving suspension pieces even though Pontiac engineers had designed dedicated hardware. For 1988 it finally received a new suspension, and the GT paired it with staggered WS6 tires and four-wheel discs. That makes '1988' mechanically meaningful, not just a date on an unchanged GT.

GT versus Formula is a body-shape lesson

The 1988 Formula deliberately combined the base notchback shape with the GT's V6 and WS6 suspension. A Formula can therefore look fast and wear the right wheels yet still be the wrong identity. The GT needs the long fastback roof and buttressed rear quarters.
