Porsche 356 B 1600 Super

The 356 B kept Porsche’s rear-engine recipe while raising its bumpers and lamps into a recognisably new face.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The T5-bodied 356 B replaced the A in September 1959 for the next model year. The 1600 Super occupied a separate place in the range from the Super 90 and Carrera. In September 1961, T6 body revisions brought a wider bonnet, an external front-wing fuel filler and a larger rear lid with two grilles.

Look a little closer.

On the Super, the exhaust outlets pass through the rear bumper guards.

Read the body before reading the badge

The T5 front bumper sits roughly ten centimetres higher than the 356 A’s, and its headlamps also moved upward. A curved single-piece windscreen and protruding front indicators complete the changed face. The later T6’s extra rear grille and fuel flap should not be assumed for 1960.

Why the Super name matters

Porsche’s history of the successor 356 C explicitly identifies the B 1600 Super’s engine as a 75 PS unit. That separates this car from the Super 90. It also avoids borrowing the four overhead camshafts of the more specialised Carrera engine simply because both belong to the 356 family.
