Porsche 959 Komfort

The 959 Komfort wrapped sequential turbocharging, sensor-controlled all-wheel drive, adjustable suspension and tyre-pressure monitoring into a road car before those ideas became common.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Porsche first showed a Gruppe B concept in 1983 and displayed the production 959 as a dramatic cutaway at the 1985 Frankfurt show. Porsche's museum data identifies the finished road car as model year 1987. The 292-car series ran in Komfort and Sport forms from 1987 to 1988; only 29 were the rarer Sport. This profile covers the fully equipped Komfort road car, not the stripped Sport or rally machines that developed the all-wheel-drive idea.

Look a little closer.

Its hollow magnesium wheels formed sealed chambers with the tyres and carried their own pressure-monitoring system.

Sequential turbos softened the waiting game

Large turbochargers can take time to build useful boost. The 959's two turbos worked in sequence so the first could respond at lower engine speed before the second added airflow higher up. Porsche paired air-cooled cylinders with water-cooled cylinder heads, a hybrid cooling arrangement inherited from racing thinking.

Komfort means the technology stays aboard

The Komfort retained the 959's road-car systems: four selectable damper programs, speed-dependent self-levelling, ABS and an electronically managed all-wheel-drive system. Porsche separately identifies only 29 Sport cars, so photos or weights attributed to a 959 S should not be used as Komfort evidence.
