A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Porsche revealed a close-to-series Carrera GT study in Paris in September 2000, then showed the production version at Geneva in 2003. The road car enlarged the concept's 5.5-litre V10 to 5.7 litres and raised output to 612 PS. Porsche created a dedicated hand-assembly operation at Leipzig; 1,270 cars were built from autumn 2003 to May 2006. The V10 traced back to the never-raced LMP 2000 prototype, but the Carrera GT itself was a homologated customer road car, not an endurance racer.

Look a little closer.

The beechwood gear knob was a deliberate nod to the wooden knobs used in old Porsche racing cars.

A race engine found a different finish line

The 68-degree V10 originated in the LMP 2000 programme, a Le Mans prototype project that never raced. Porsche reworked it for the concept and enlarged it again for production. That history explains the racing architecture without turning the customer Carrera GT into a race car.

The clutch helped lower the whole powertrain

Porsche's two-plate ceramic dry clutch measured only 169 millimetres across. Its compact diameter allowed engineers to mount the V10 and transverse six-speed gearbox lower, reducing the centre of gravity. This was packaging work, not merely an exotic-material boast.
