Clio was a name, not a number: Renault wanted the new car to feel like its own character rather than simply the next Renault 5.

Small outside, more serious inside
At about 3.7 metres long, the Clio remained easy to park. Renault moved it slightly upmarket with stronger attention to comfort, equipment and build quality, changing what families expected from a supermini.
