More than a set of wheels.
Renault launched the Espace in 1984 after Matra developed its one-box body idea. The refreshed 1988 range introduced the Quadra system; this page keeps that first-generation TXE Quadra separate from later V6 and second-generation Espaces.
Look a little closer.
The two front seats could rotate 180 degrees and the five individual rear seats could be removed, letting the parked Espace become a little family lounge.

A car-shaped room
Matra's composite body panels covered a galvanized steel structure, while a flat floor and seven independent seats made the cabin the main design idea. Renault called this kind of adaptable family vehicle a ‘car for living.’

The Quadra used permanent torque distribution and a viscous coupling instead of turning the Espace into a traditional truck-like 4×4. It added traction for wet, snowy and loose surfaces while preserving the cabin and road-car character.
