Renault Clio II 1.6 RXT

Renault's second Clio arrived in France in 1998 with a rounder body and more passenger room. The 1.6 RXT five-door sat near the top of the French launch range, using a straightforward eight-valve engine and five-speed manual to pull the front wheels.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Clio II launched in March 1998 with three- and five-door bodies. Renault's current history describes it as larger, rounder and roomier. French launch trims were Base, RTA, RTE and RXT—not RXE. RXE joined the revised French ladder for model year 2000, so this candidate has been corrected to the source-supported 1998 RXT rather than preserving an impossible market/year/trim combination.

Look a little closer.

Renault kept selling Clio II after Clio III arrived, eventually using the Campus name, so generation and year matter more than the Clio badge alone.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Why RXE must become RXT

A French trim-history table places RXT at level E3 for 1998–99 and introduces RXE at E2 for 2000–01. A contemporary French specification listing also identifies the March 1998 1.6 five-door manual as RXT. Keeping RXE would create a trim that the French launch range did not offer.

Room from a rounder shell

Clio II grew and adopted a more rounded shape to improve habitability. That family-level statement is safe for the generation; performance and equipment details still need to remain attached to this 1.6 RXT five-door manual.
