Rivian R1T prototype

Before customer trucks existed, this clean-sheet electric pickup showed how a low battery skateboard could create new cargo spaces.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Rivian revealed the R1T in November 2018 and displayed evolving prototypes through 2019. The company announced a family of 105, 135 and 180 kWh battery configurations, four-motor drive and ambitious performance targets. This page preserves those period prototype claims; it does not treat them as EPA-certified range, identify an unverified display-car battery, or substitute later production specifications.

Look a little closer.

The Gear Tunnel doors doubled as little seats or steps, while the tunnel itself was long enough for snowboards and other awkward outdoor gear.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Claims are not the same as production ratings

Rivian's 2018 launch sheet marked its table as estimated and projected deliveries for late 2020. The eventual customer truck arrived later with changed configurations, so every range, acceleration and battery figure on this page is labeled as a period program claim.

The skateboard made room for unusual storage

Packaging the battery and drive units below the body left a 330-litre front trunk, a 350-litre cross-body Gear Tunnel and a 200-litre sealed bin beneath the pickup bed in the original prototype specification.
