Volkswagen Corrado G60

A spiral-shaped mechanical supercharger and a rear spoiler that rose by itself made Volkswagen's new 1988 coupé feel almost futuristic.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volkswagen first planned the car as a Scirocco successor, then moved it above the Scirocco because its engineering and price had grown. Karmann built the compact 2+2 in Osnabrück. At the German launch, the defining engine was the 160 PS G60, while the spoiler automatically extended at 120 km/h to help stability.

Look a little closer.

The rear spoiler hid at low speed, then lifted automatically at 120 km/h on German cars.

Why it was not called Scirocco III

The project began as a successor to the Scirocco II, but Volkswagen decided in 1984 that the older coupé would continue. The technically ambitious new car was placed higher in the range and given its own name, Corrado, while Karmann continued as the builder in Osnabrück.

Supercharging without waiting for exhaust

The G-Lader is a mechanically driven scroll-type supercharger. That direct drive helps it respond as the engine speeds up, and Volkswagen combined it with a 1,781 cc four-cylinder to produce 225 Nm at 3,800 rpm. The G60 badge identifies the charging system, not a 6.0-litre engine.
