Volkswagen Lupo 3L TDI
Volkswagen chased a number in the name: less than three litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, achieved by making nearly every system save energy.

Joyride shows this gap instead of substituting an asking price, unsold bid or mismatched special vehicle.
More than a set of wheels.
The Lupo entered Volkswagen's range in 1998, and the special 3L TDI arrived in mid-1999. It paired a tiny three-cylinder diesel with an automated manual gearbox, start-stop and coasting. Aluminium, magnesium, thin glass and lighter equipment cut about 150 kg from an ordinary Lupo SDI, helping the four-seat production car reach a standard fuel-consumption figure of 2.99 l/100 km.
Look a little closer.
The bonnet, doors and front wings were aluminium, while the early tailgate mixed aluminium and magnesium to save still more weight.

Efficiency came from the whole car
The 2.99 l/100 km result was not an engine trick alone. Volkswagen used special thin glass, aluminium panels, light seats and running-gear parts, low-energy tyres and carefully controlled shifting. Its training manual records 830 kg—150 kg below the Lupo SDI used as the comparison car.

The five-speed gearbox still uses gears and a clutch like a manual transmission, but a hydraulic system does the pedal and lever work. That let the control system choose early upshifts for economy, add a driver-selectable manual mode and open the clutch for coasting.
