Volvo 480 Turbo

The 480 Turbo added an electronically controlled turbocharger and intercooler to Volvo's first series-built front-wheel-drive shape, lifting power to 120 hp without changing its distinctive glass-tailgate wedge.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volvo's 480 project was developed by its Dutch subsidiary and built at Born in the Netherlands. The 480 ES introduced a new transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout for the company, plus a wedge body with pop-up lamps, a glass tailgate and a driver-focused electronic information centre. For model year 1988, Volvo added the Turbo: its electronically controlled turbocharger and intercooler raised output to 120 hp and pushed maximum speed beyond 200 km/h. The profile is European because Volvo's planned US launch never happened.

Look a little closer.

Its electronic information centre could show average fuel use, average speed, estimated range and outside temperature.

A Swedish badge on a Dutch technology project

Volvo Cars B.V. in the Netherlands developed the smaller cars in Project Galaxy and built the 480 at Born. That makes 'Netherlands' meaningful production context, while the make remains Sweden's Volvo.

The Turbo belongs to model year 1988

Volvo's heritage releases consistently say the Turbo arrived for model year 1988. They identify an electronically controlled turbocharger, intercooler, 120 hp and a top speed above 200 km/h. Those claims are Volvo figures, not independent road-test results.
