This graceful Volvo joined a Swedish design to British body pressing and assembly, then sent a sturdy four-cylinder's power to the rear wheels.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volvo showed the P1800 in Brussels in January 1960 and began production and deliveries in 1961. Pelle Petterson created the winning shape while working at Frua in Turin. With Volvo's Gothenburg plant short of space, Pressed Steel built the bodies and Jensen Motors assembled the cars in England. Assembly moved to Gothenburg in 1963, when the added S in P1800S marked Sweden rather than a new first-year identity.

Look a little closer.

The first P1800 prototype was hand-built at Frua in Turin in 1957, four years before customers received production cars.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

A Swedish car with a British production chain

The 1961 P1800 was not simply shipped abroad after being built in Sweden. Pressed Steel formed its steel body and Jensen Motors performed final assembly in Britain. Volvo brought assembly home in 1963 and body production to Olofström later, so the no-suffix P1800 is a useful marker for the original Jensen chapter.

Related to the Amazon, but reshaped for touring

Volvo based the coupe on the 121/122S floor pan but shortened the wheelbase to 245 cm. That gave the new body familiar Volvo running gear underneath while its low roof, long doors and two-seat cabin delivered a very different job: comfortable long-distance touring rather than four-door family transport.
