A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volvo unveiled the XC90 on 7 January 2002. The T6 topped the early European engine range, with two small parallel turbochargers—each serving three cylinders—and a four-speed Geartronic. Launch performance was explicitly preliminary, while the 2002/2003 date split reflects reveal and sales timing rather than a mechanical change.

Look a little closer.

The XC90 hid its third-row seats beneath the cargo floor when they were not needed.

The year is a launch date, not a universal registration date

Volvo’s heritage page dates the reveal to 7 January 2002 and says sales started in 2003. The correct title is therefore a 2002 launch-specification T6; national model-year and first-registration records can legitimately say 2003.

Why a transverse six still left room for family packaging

Volvo retained its transverse-engine philosophy and used two compact turbos, each fed by three cylinders. The short fore-aft powertrain arrangement helped preserve cabin length while the 2.9-litre tune delivered peak torque from 1,800 rpm.

Rollover prevention and protection were engineered together

RSC used a gyro sensor to detect and counter developing rollover risk, while ROPS and three-row inflatable curtains addressed occupant protection if a rollover still occurred. Volvo’s own heritage summary presents these as part of five global innovations.
