More than a set of wheels.
Volvo introduced the S80 in May 1998 as its new large premium sedan and the first production Volvo on the P2 architecture. The launch T6 paired a compact transverse six-cylinder package with twin turbochargers, front-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic. Its broad 380 N·m torque plateau aimed for strong everyday pull, while the Inflatable Curtain and WHIPS made occupant protection central to the new platform story. This entry is specifically the 2,783 cc launch T6, not the later 2,922 cc update.
Look a little closer.
The launch S80 T6 put six cylinders sideways across the engine bay and still found room for two turbochargers.

Why the sideways six mattered
Putting all six cylinders across the engine bay helped Volvo combine a short nose and roomy passenger cell with front-wheel drive, but it left a tightly packed space for two turbochargers, cooling and the automatic transmission. The broad 380 N·m plateau from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm shows the goal: useful pull across ordinary driving speeds, not only a dramatic peak.

P2 was more than a new set of dimensions. The S80's Inflatable Curtain was intended to add side-impact head protection along the roof edge, while WHIPS let the front seat and head restraint structure manage occupant movement in some rear impacts. That makes the launch S80 important for both performance packaging and occupant protection.
