More than a set of wheels.
The 1950 Rambler entered a U.S. market dominated by larger cars. Nash launched the well-equipped Custom Convertible Landau first, using a 100-inch wheelbase and its proven flathead six. Unlike a normal full convertible, metal rails stayed above the doors while the center roof folded back, helping the unitized body remain stiff.
Look a little closer.
Its roof could open to the sky, but the steel window frames stayed in place like the outline of a hardtop.

Why the Landau kept its roof rails
A fully open convertible needs extra reinforcement because removing the roof weakens the body. Nash instead retained the side rails and window frames as guides for a weather-tight folding fabric center. The solution gave passengers an open roof while preserving more of the strength of the compact unitized shell.

Nash did not introduce the Rambler as the cheapest stripped-down model. The first Landau was a Custom with features often charged separately on larger cars, helping justify its $1,808 price. Its small size reduced weight and fuel use, while the six-cylinder engine and six-passenger claim kept it from feeling like a tiny economy special.
