BMW 3 Series 325i

The first E36 325i wrapped BMW's smooth 2.5-litre six and rear-drive balance in the roomier, more aerodynamic shape that defined the 3 Series for the 1990s.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

BMW introduced the third-generation 3 Series in October 1990, initially as a four-door sedan. The 325i was the sportiest regular launch model, combining a reworked 2.5-litre straight-six, four-valve technology and 192 hp with rear-wheel drive. The E36 also introduced a 2,700 mm wheelbase and a new multi-link-style rear suspension arrangement, moving the 3 Series toward a more modern 1990s formula without abandoning its front-engine, rear-drive identity.

Look a little closer.

Its naturally balanced straight-six sent power to the rear wheels while the front wheels concentrated on steering.

Why an inline-six feels different

An inline-six spaces six combustion events evenly around the engine's cycle. The motion of one piston also helps cancel the motion of another, giving the layout excellent natural balance. In the 325i that smoothness is useful, not merely luxurious: it lets the engine rev cleanly and deliver power progressively in an everyday sedan.

Modernizing the 3 Series without changing its compass

The E36 changed the 3 Series' proportions and suspension thinking, yet kept the front-engine, rear-drive layout BMW considered central to the model. Its 2,700 mm wheelbase, new rear axle and standard ABS on the 325i made the car more stable and mature while preserving the division of jobs between the steering front wheels and driven rear wheels.
