A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Astra F premiered in 1991 as the seventh generation of Opel's compact line and the first to use the Astra name in Germany. Opel emphasized passive safety, cabin space, catalytic converters and material recovery. Dutch catalog records show the three-door 1.6i GL manual from August 1991, while Opel says the first production variants reached dealerships in October. This makes the scoped car a valid launch-era configuration rather than a later body-style extrapolation.

Look a little closer.

Its safety story began with structure, belt tensioners and anti-submarining seats before dual airbags became standard.

Safety before the airbag became universal

The 1991 Astra's safety story should not be flattened into an airbag claim: Opel dates standard dual front airbags to 1994. At launch, the important work was structural and restraint-based—side-impact bars, seat shapes intended to resist sliding under the belt, and belt tensioners.

Efficiency meant air, space and materials too

The Astra F treated efficiency as more than fuel economy. A range-best Cd as low as 0.30 reduced drag, the forward windscreen created more room without a huge footprint, and Opel designed many plastic parts for recycling while incorporating recycled polypropylene in others.
