Nissan Qashqai 2.0

Nissan's first Qashqai mixed the easy size and road manners of a family hatchback with the taller stance and tougher lower body of an SUV. The 2.0-litre petrol version could also be ordered with Nissan's ALL-MODE four-wheel-drive system.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Nissan unveiled the production Qashqai in Paris on September 6, 2006 after showing a concept in Geneva in 2004. It was designed in London, developed mainly at Nissan Technical Centre Europe in Cranfield and built in Sunderland. The car entered production in December 2006, but European customer sales did not start until February 2007, so 2006 is its debut and build-start year rather than its retail launch year.

Look a little closer.

The Qashqai was designed in London, engineered mainly in Cranfield and built in Sunderland, making this Nissan a particularly European project.

The gap Nissan tried to fill

Nissan placed the Qashqai between a C-segment hatchback and a compact SUV. Its upper body was shaped to look like a dynamic passenger car, while pronounced wheel arches, a higher stance and the lower body suggested SUV strength. The idea was to offer an everyday family car for buyers who did not want a large, aggressive SUV.

A 2006 car that went on sale in 2007

The production model was revealed and its Sunderland assembly began in 2006, but the first European retail deliveries were scheduled for February 2007. Keeping those dates separate avoids treating a motor-show debut or a factory milestone as a customer launch.
