Toyota Corolla Axio 1.5G

The smaller 2012 Corolla Axio kept a familiar 1.5-litre engine but made the Japanese sedan easier to place on narrow roads. This exact 1.5G paired that engine with a five-speed manual rather than the better-known continuously variable transmission.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Toyota launched the redesigned Corolla Axio in Japan on May 11, 2012. The sedan became 50 mm shorter than its predecessor while preserving useful cabin space and a five-seat layout. This page follows the front-wheel-drive 1.5G catalog entry coded DBA-NZE161 with a five-speed manual; it is not the NRE160 1.3-litre car, an all-wheel-drive NZE164, or a CVT-equipped 1.5G.

Look a little closer.

Toyota sold the same 1.5G grade with either a five-speed manual or Super CVT-i. The two gearboxes have different catalog fuel figures, so this manual car keeps its own 18.0 km/L JC08 result instead of borrowing the CVT number.

One model code prevents an engine mix-up

Toyota's exact May 2012 catalog identifies the 1.5G manual as DBA-NZE161 with the 1NZ-FE engine. NRE160 belongs to the 1.3-litre branch, so correcting the queue code protects the profile from mixing two different engines and outputs.

Manual and CVT figures stay separate

Toyota offered both transmissions in the 1.5G, but they were not one interchangeable specification. The exact manual catalog lists 18.0 km/L on the JC08 cycle; Toyota's launch material discusses different economy figures for CVT cars. Test cycle, gearbox and driven wheels must remain attached to the matching variant.
