Hyundai IONIQ 5

The long-range rear-drive IONIQ 5 carried its big battery flat under the floor and put one motor at the back. It could travel an EPA-rated 303 miles, charge very quickly at a suitable station and even share stored electricity with outside equipment.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The IONIQ 5 introduced Hyundai's dedicated E-GMP electric platform to the U.S. for model year 2022. Its 118.1-inch wheelbase was longer than the body shape first suggested, creating a flat-floor cabin. The long-range RWD version paired a 77.4-kWh battery with one 225-hp rear motor, prioritizing range over the extra traction and power of the dual-motor AWD model.

Look a little closer.

Its 118.1-inch wheelbase is 4.4 inches longer than the wheelbase of the much larger-looking 2001 Prius in this same batch.

Long-range RWD, not Standard Range or AWD

The 2022 U.S. sheet lists three distinct setups. Standard Range RWD uses 58.0 kWh and 168 hp; long-range AWD uses two motors and 320 hp; this exact version uses the 77.4-kWh pack and a single 168-kW rear motor. SE, SEL and Limited RWD trims share the sheet's 303-mile range rating.

What an 18-minute charge really means

Hyundai specifies 18 minutes from 10 to 80 percent with a greater-than-250-kW, 800-volt rapid charger. That is a partial charge under favorable high-power conditions, not a promise of zero to full at every charger. The same U.S. sheet gives 6 hours 43 minutes for 10 to 100 percent on standard 240-volt AC Level II charging.

The platform created the room

E-GMP was designed only for battery-electric vehicles. Storing the battery beneath a flat floor removed the need for a normal transmission tunnel and helped create flexible cabin space. Its integrated charging control unit also enabled vehicle-to-load operation, so the traction battery could power external 110- or 220-volt equipment through the appropriate outlet or adapter.
