More than a set of wheels.
The Giulietta Sprint made its public debut at the Turin Motor Show on 21 April 1954, before the more conventional saloon was ready. Franco Scaglione developed the winning shape at Bertone from work begun by Alfa Romeo's own design centre. About 2,000 orders arrived during the first days of the show. Beneath the low coupé body sat a light-alloy 1.3-litre twin-cam four, a compact expression of technology Alfa associated with racing. The Sprint opened a Giulietta family that would become a symbol of Italy's post-war economic expansion.
Look a little closer.
The first Giulietta shown to the public was the sporty Sprint coupé—an unusual reversal at a time when manufacturers normally launched the practical saloon first.

The glamorous stopgap became the headline
The coupé arrived while the Giulietta saloon's production launch was still being prepared. That scheduling problem became an advantage: the Sprint gave the whole new range a memorable sporting identity, and orders at Turin showed that buyers were ready for a small Alfa with genuine performance rather than a scaled-down economy car.

The Sprint's success demanded far more than hand-building a few show cars. Bertone developed the production version of Scaglione's shape and expanded its industrial role to supply the coupé in volume. That relationship helped establish a model for Italian design houses to combine style work with series manufacture.
