A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Alfa Romeo brought the GTV name back to showrooms in 1995 with the Type 916 coupé. Its shape came from cooperation between Alfa Romeo and Pininfarina, but the profile was more than styling: the launch 2.0-litre Twin Spark mixed two plugs per cylinder, four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. It was a new kind of Alfa sports coupé, using front-wheel drive instead of the rear-drive transaxle layout of the earlier Alfetta GTV.

Look a little closer.

GTV stands for Gran Turismo Veloce—roughly, a fast grand-touring car.

Twin Spark is more than a badge

Alfa's own engine history explains the recipe: two plugs for each cylinder, narrow-angle four-valve combustion chambers and a patented cam-phase variator. Those pieces aim at quicker, cleaner burning and useful torque across more of the rev range; they do not mean there are two separate engines.

A sharp body over a practical layout

The GTV's low nose, diagonal body crease and clipped tail were created with Pininfarina, yet the mechanical package was transverse-engine and front-wheel drive. A 2+2 cabin and hatch-like fastback opening made it a grand tourer rather than a stripped two-seat racer.
