Austin Seven

A tiny four-seat prototype showed that a small car could still be a proper car, not a motorcycle with extra wheels.

A matching completed auction sale has not been verified for this exact year, body, trim, engine, transmission and market.

Joyride shows this gap instead of substituting an asking price, unsold bid or mismatched special vehicle.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Sir Herbert Austin and young draughtsman Stanley Edge developed the Seven as an affordable miniature car. This page follows the Science Museum's second 1922 prototype, used for press testing and early advertising. It is not presented as a later production Chummy: its identity, measurements and museum-recorded specification stay attached to this exact prototype.

Look a little closer.

Austin advertised this prototype as “The Motor for the Millions,” a neat clue to the audience the company hoped to reach.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Prototype, not a later Chummy

The Science Museum identifies its car as the second of the first six prototypes. Joyride therefore uses the museum's 1922 measurements and does not silently substitute later 747 cc production-car details where they differ.

A small car with a large effect

The British Motor Museum describes the Seven as a small car with global influence. Its affordable, compact layout helped make motoring possible for more families and inspired vehicles and makers far beyond Austin.
