Benz Velo
A light Benz became the first small car built in a standardized series, turning the motor carriage from a one-off experiment into something a workshop could repeat.

More than a set of wheels.
Carl Benz launched the Velociped in 1894, and its short name—Velo—stuck. Mercedes-Benz's public archive calls it both the first small car and the world's first series automobile. That does not mean a modern moving assembly line: it means buyers could order a standardized design rather than commissioning a unique machine. The launch car used a 1,045 cc single cylinder making 1.5 hp; later Velos grew stronger, so this profile keeps the first-year numbers separate from later family figures.
Look a little closer.
Its name comes from Velociped—the period word for a light wheeled machine and a cousin of the word bicycle.

Series-built is not the same as assembly-line built
The Velo's milestone was standardization: repeated cars used the same basic design and parts. That made ordering, repairing and exporting a motor car more practical years before Ford's moving assembly line.

A single cylinder only makes a power stroke at intervals. The Velo's tall flywheel stored some energy while the engine pushed and returned it while the piston moved through the quieter parts of its cycle, helping the little car keep turning smoothly.
