The R 62 brought a bigger boxer engine to BMW touring, with enough substance for long journeys and sidecar work.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

BMW introduced the R 62 and sporting R 63 in 1928 as its first motorcycles in the 750 cc class. The R 62 used a 745 cc flat twin and served as the touring choice. BMW records 4,355 built before the pressed-steel-framed R 11 replaced it in 1929.

Look a little closer.

Its replacement, the R 11, began with the R 62’s engine but wrapped it in a very different pressed-steel frame.

The rest of the motorcycle grew too

BMW’s model history pairs the R 62 with the smaller R 52 and notes a reinforced gearbox, a larger front brake drum and spiral-toothed rear-drive gears. A larger engine asks more of the parts around it. These changes show that the touring model was developed as a complete machine.

A touring machine could become a combination

Sinsheim’s museum describes the R 62 as designed for sidecar use as well as touring. A sidecar adds another wheel and carrying space, changing the machine’s job from carrying a rider to transporting more people or equipment. This helps explain the emphasis on dependable long-distance use.
