A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Capri was unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1969 as Ford of Europe's sporty coupé. The 1600 GT combined a stronger version of the Kent Crossflow four with a four-speed gearbox, front discs and rear drums. Its dramatic proportions suggested an expensive grand tourer, but familiar mass-production components kept it within reach. Ford later said more than 1.8 million Capris were sold across three generations.

Look a little closer.

Ford's famous launch line called it the car you always promised yourself—clever wording for a sporty shape built from practical parts.

One Capri, several European engine families

The 1600 GT was not the same mechanical package sold under every badge across Europe. This profile follows the UK-built inline-four Crossflow version, while German factories offered V4 and V6 combinations. The body idea was shared; the exact engine depended on market and plant.

Style sold the promise; scale delivered it

Ford paired a long bonnet and short rear deck with engines, gearboxes and axles related to high-volume cars. This let buyers choose a glamorous-looking fastback without paying for a clean-sheet exotic powertrain, a formula that drove sales past 1.8 million across the model's life.
