Ford Mondeo 2.0i 16V Ghia five-door

Ford made its Sierra replacement a front-drive world project, then gave the practical five-door Ghia a smooth 16-valve two-litre engine and a large lift-up tailgate.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Mondeo reached European showrooms in March 1993 as the result of Ford's CDW27 world-car programme. The five-door 2.0i 16V Ghia combined the launch body's hatchback practicality with the strongest four-cylinder petrol engine in the early range. Contemporary records place engineering work across Dearborn, Dunton and Cologne, while the Dutch-market specification fixes the exact manual five-door at 100 kW, 175 Nm and front-wheel drive. The broader range won the 1994 European Car of the Year award.

Look a little closer.

The Mondeo name echoed the project's worldwide ambition, and the 1994 Car of the Year jury explicitly described it as an ambitious world-car project.

A world car assembled from three engineering centres

Contemporary reporting described CDW27 as a six-billion-dollar programme. Detroit handled the V6, automatic gearbox and climate hardware; Dunton developed the interior, steering, suspension, electronics and four-cylinder engine; Cologne led structural engineering and the three body styles. The result was globally coordinated, even though regional cars were not visually identical.

Why the exact fifth door matters

The launch Mondeo came as four-door saloon, five-door hatchback and estate. This profile fixes the five-door manual: the lift-up rear glass gives a wider loading opening, and the Dutch record lists a 470-litre luggage compartment, 1,336 kg empty mass and the same 100 kW engine as the saloon.
