A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Mahindra introduced the Thar CRDe in India at the end of 2010 as a lifestyle off-roader with a deliberately familiar, upright shape. It evolved the line running through Mahindra's CJ340 and MM540, but added a 105 bhp common-rail diesel, drive-by-wire throttle, power steering and independent front suspension. Its ladder frame, low-range four-wheel-drive hardware and rear leaf springs kept the working-vehicle toughness. A less powerful DI model was sold alongside it for rural buyers; the later 2015 CRDe update added an auto-engaging rear differential lock and must not be backdated to this launch car.

Look a little closer.

Mahindra marketed the launch Thar as both a trail machine and a blank canvas: accessories and customized vehicles could be booked from the start.

Old silhouette, newer diesel manners

The Thar's shape deliberately recalled Mahindra's CJ-family past, but the CRDe version was not merely an old Jeep with a new badge. The launch material calls out electronic drive-by-wire control, hydraulic power steering and independent front suspension, while retaining a ladder frame and leaf-sprung rear axle for rough-road durability.

CRDe is a specific launch variant

The 2,498 cc, 105 bhp CRDe 4x4 must be kept separate from the 2,523 cc, 63 bhp DI models offered in two- and four-wheel-drive forms. It also predates Mahindra's 2015 'New Thar CRDe' and that model's auto-engaging differential lock. Using one generic first-generation spec sheet without naming the engine risks combining three different vehicles.
