Polski Fiat 126p 600

The first Polish 126p packed a tiny air-cooled two-cylinder engine behind four seats. It was modest and simple, but it became one of the cars that put everyday family travel within reach across Poland.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Poland licensed Fiat's 126 for local production, and Fiat's Polish archive says the first cars were assembled from Italian parts at Bielsko-Biała on 6 June 1973. Formal Polish production followed on 22 July. This page stays with that early 594 cc, 23 PS car rather than borrowing specifications from the later 652 cc 126p. The cover source identifies a 1973 survivor, but restoration originality is not established; modern tyres and restored details are visible and must not be mistaken for untouched factory specification.

Look a little closer.

Its engine had only two cylinders and 23 metric horsepower, yet the whole car was short enough to turn simple machinery into useful family transport.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Why 23 horsepower could still matter

Twenty-three metric horsepower sounds tiny today, but speed was not the 126p's main achievement. Its small footprint, four seats and simple machinery helped make private family travel possible for many people. The car's importance comes from access and usefulness, not from pretending it was fast.

Two Polish production milestones

The first assembled examples and the formal production launch were separate events. Cars came together from Italian parts on 6 June 1973, while formal production began on 22 July. Showing both dates explains the transition into Polish mass production instead of compressing it into a single birthday.
