A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Proton launched the Perdana on 26 January 1995 as its first luxury sedan and first 2.0-litre model. Its engineering began with the Mitsubishi Eterna platform, then Proton assembled it at Shah Alam for Malaysian buyers. The launch-era car used Mitsubishi's 4G63 four-cylinder, front-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic. Anti-lock brakes and cruise control helped it feel like a clear step above Proton's smaller cars. The better-known Perdana V6 arrived only on 12 November 1998.

Look a little closer.

Perdana means 'first' or 'premier' in Malay—a fitting name for Proton's first luxury sedan and first two-litre car.

An executive Proton built from familiar foundations

The first Perdana shared its basic architecture with Mitsubishi's Eterna. That let Proton enter a larger, more demanding class without beginning every component from a blank page, while Shah Alam assembly and Proton branding made it a distinct Malaysian product.

Why this is not the famous V6

The 1995 launch car used a Mitsubishi 4G63 inline-four. Proton's own milestone history dates the V6 model to 12 November 1998. Keeping those dates separate prevents the later six-cylinder specification from being backdated onto the original Perdana.
