A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Tata unveiled the original Indica in 1998 as a roomy hatchback designed for Indian families. Early cars sold strongly but disappointed some owners, so Tata replaced or improved dozens of parts and introduced the Indica V2 in 2001. This page follows a naturally aspirated diesel V2 sold in India in 2003, not the later turbocharged DICOR or eV2. Period trim equipment varied, so the page does not treat a photograph as proof of DLS or DLX trim.

Look a little closer.

Tata says 98 percent of the original Indica's 3,885 components were made in India, supported by more than 300 vendors.

A very public improvement program

Tata invited dissatisfied owners back, repaired roughly 45,000 cars and changed 42 important parts. The improved V2 became an example of engineering after launch: finding weaknesses, redesigning them and earning customers back rather than pretending the first version was perfect.

Designed around Indian needs

The project aimed for the interior room of a larger Ambassador with the outside size and running economy of a compact Maruti. Italian design support helped shape the body, while Tata and a large Indian supplier network developed the production car.
