A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

When the fifth-generation Corolla family arrived in 1983, most family models changed to front-wheel drive. The sporty Levin and Trueno coupés kept front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layouts. This page covers the Japanese three-door Corolla Levin GT-APEX at launch, not the pop-up-headlamp Sprinter Trueno or later export versions.

Look a little closer.

AE86 began as a Toyota vehicle code, but fans started using '86' as the car's everyday name.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Levin and Trueno are not the same face

The Corolla Levin used fixed headlamps and an automatic grille whose louvers reacted to coolant temperature. Its Sprinter Trueno sister used retractable headlamps. Both can be AE86s, but a photo of one should not silently represent the other.

Why rear-wheel drive mattered

Toyota kept the sports coupés rear-drive while the family sedans moved to front-wheel drive. The engine turns the rear wheels, leaving the front wheels to steer; that layout helped make the AE86 popular with drivers who valued balance and control.
