A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volkswagen unveiled the first Scirocco in February 1974 and presented it at Geneva in March, several months before the Golf. Giorgetto Giugiaro’s compact coupé used the company’s new transverse, water-cooled front-engine layout. This page covers the 85 PS TS launch version, not the lower-power 50 or 70 PS cars or the later fuel-injected GTI.

Look a little closer.

Volkswagen names several cars after winds; the Scirocco is named for a hot wind that blows from North Africa toward the Mediterranean.

The Scirocco reached the public before the Golf and shared the new generation’s transverse engine and front-wheel-drive architecture in a lower, sportier body.

TS meant more than extra power

Volkswagen’s launch history identifies the 85 PS TS as the strongest early version and notes front and rear anti-roll bars plus 175/70 HR 13 radial tyres.
