A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volvo's 850 replaced the old rear-drive formula with a transverse five-cylinder, front-wheel drive, Delta-link rear axle and integrated side-impact structure. The estate arrived in 1993, and the limited T-5R became the attention-grabber at the 1994 Geneva show and in UK showrooms for 1995. Volvo Car UK reserved only 200 of the initial 2,500-car worldwide run, offering saloon or estate bodies and manual or automatic gearboxes.

Look a little closer.

The UK launch car's graphite-grey 17-inch wheels were named Titan and wore 205/45ZR tyres.

Fast estate, not a BTCC race-car copy

The T-5R arrived beside Volvo's famous 1994 British Touring Car Championship estate, but the road car remained a five-seat production Volvo with ABS, SIPS, an integrated rear child seat and luggage equipment. Its lowered suspension and stiffer springs borrowed the sporting mood without turning a showroom estate into a racing machine.

One planned run became three colours

The January 1995 UK launch release described 2,500 cars worldwide and 200 for the UK. Volvo's later history explains what happened next: the yellow run sold quickly, so 2,500 black cars followed and then 2,500 dark-green cars. The early press-kit number was therefore the initial run, not the eventual global T-5R total.
