Alfa Romeo 24 HP

The first production car of the company that would become Alfa Romeo was a large, carefully engineered tourer built before the Romeo name appeared on its badge.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

A.L.F.A. was founded in Milan on 24 June 1910, and designer Giuseppe Merosi's 24 HP became its first production automobile. This profile follows the preserved 1910 Torpedo-bodied car: a 4.1-litre, four-cylinder machine aimed at the medium-high end of the young motor-car market. Alfa Romeo bought the surviving car back from its Swiss dealer in 1953. The broader 24 HP line grew through four series, spawned a lighter Corsa competition version, and provided the engineering path toward the post-war 20-30 ES.

Look a little closer.

Its name did not mean the engine made only 24 horsepower: the launch engine produced 42 CV, while “24 HP” was the model's period rating name.

A company begins with a complete car

The 24 HP was not merely an old model later adopted by Alfa Romeo. Stellantis Heritage identifies it, together with the smaller 12 HP, as the first product of the agreement between company leader Ugo Stella and engineer Giuseppe Merosi. The preserved Castagna-bodied car therefore anchors the beginning of A.L.F.A.'s own design and manufacturing story.

A road car that immediately went racing

A.L.F.A. shortened and lightened the 24 HP into a two-seat Corsa weighing 870 kg. Nino Franchini led the 1911 Targa Florio by more than six minutes in terrible weather before mud blinded him and a damaged wheel ended the attempt. The episode established the road-and-race connection that would recur throughout Alfa Romeo history without turning this Torpedo profile into the competition variant.
